52 Pages of Love & Letting Go

If you remember, after finishing, “plant collectors in bolivia”, I decided it would be a good idea to make a little book once a year. So, with the close of 2010, I have, “Love & Letting Go”, a book of words, images, & drawings.

This book feels a little less light & a little less pure than plant collectors, but I feel that is appropriate. The first book was a bunch of things written over years where honestly, I didn’t know about that much. “Love & Letting Go” is about the year when so many things changed. I do wish I had written more. Going back through various journals, I found a shift after moving from writing things for the sake of writing to writing things to stay organized. Instead of words to explain going ons, I only had words that reminded me where I needed to be & what I needed to get done. While I am pleased that I’ve been able to get more organized, I don’t want to lose out on those other things!

I do plan on making a new book for 2011. I have no idea yet what it will be called or what it will contain, but I am excited to see what will happen this year!

Salvador Plascencia’s, “The People of Paper”

Time to go off topic again, because today I feel like talking about books, not crafts.

I read this book not too long ago, but it has been following me around since then. I can’t even properly mention what it’s about as I feel it’s about a lot of things & none of those things follow a linear plot very well, nor did they need to. There is a story of a surgeon who makes origami organs from paper. There is an immigrant story. There is a story about a saint who decides to live the life of a luchador instead of something more holy. There are so many stories about failed relationships.

Mostly it is a book about incredible sadness which is probably why the feelings from reading linger much longer than the details of the various plots. This book may not break your heart, but it will make you feel that way regardless. The book also makes you fully aware that you are only reading a book, which in a way made me feel silly for being so invested. It reminds you that there is an author, that the characters, to you, exist only on those pages. It makes you aware of how you are holding the book as you read.

Tentative Pages: Love & Letting Go

I’m never sure if it’s a good idea to share work in progress, but I did make some time to work on layouts in Blurb.

Book 2: Love & Letting Go

It’s been a few months since I started working on this other book & now it has a proper title. Unlike “plant collectors in bolivia”, everything in this book has been included as it is written rather than compiled over a few years worth of material so a title was not easy to come up with so early; there is no way I could have predicted what I’d be writing about over the year.

But now, one theme does seem prevalent & that has become the title, “Love & Letting Go”. This book is about feeling so in love with people, things, and moments that you’re head is almost swollen, you are so close to floating into the clouds on love. But of course, you have to let it go sometimes. Nothing lasts forever except maybe the very act of loving itself. For everything & everyone that you love & let go, you find something new to fall in love with all over again. It is a cycle that is sometimes painful, always beautiful, & something that has been a huge part of my life so far this year. Some of these pages are immensely happy, some of them are lonely. I will be working on them until the end of this year, & I hope you will take the time to read them when they’re ready.

Preview of Book 2

During the past winter break, I compiled a bunch of things I had written over a three year period, self published through blurb.com, and ended up with “plant collectors in bolivia”.

The response from my friends has been so insanely wonderful! I wasn’t really expecting too many people to take an interest, but I have plenty of people asking for a copy. From those who do have one, they’ve been telling me what their favorite parts were which really makes me just want to fall over dead from happiness, it’s such a beautiful feeling!

I’ve been doing a much better job of keeping track of my writings & have been working on making a second book since pretty much the moment I finished my first, starting a book on Blurb’s BookSmart software, sticking in placeholder images, etc.  I plan on continuing this for much of the year, editing during my next winter break (my life is timed by an academic calendar), & having something new for you to read in 2011.
